Confidence best choice

Best HD Camcorder tape based (mini-dv)

Canon HV20

– Best consumer HD video quality (and good in low-light)

– Audio: tape motor is often audible on recording (recommended fix: Ohrwurm mic)

Best HD Camcorder HDD based

Canon HG10

– One of the best HDD based video quality due to higher bit rates. No tape motor noise since HDD

– MPEG4 format: very few software can read/edit this format at the moment

Best advanced compact camera

Canon G9

– Great photo quality outdoors at low ISO

– Huge number of features and manual controls

– Noisy at high ISO and like most compacts you end up with high ISO indoors quickly

Best entry compact camera (indoors)

Fuji F40fd

Kodak Z885 (for its ISO8000 only)

– Great low-light performance

– No manual controls

– Outdoor pictures bit undersaturated which can be corrected with computer (look at Canon A or SD series for mainly outdoor, example A650)

Kodak Z885: offers full manual control and amazingly high ISO8000 which isn’t very pretty but might be still acceptable for most. If you don’t care for ISO8000 or manual go with Fuji

Best affordable digital SLR camera

Olympus E-410

– World smallest and lightest SLR (around 700mg)

– Costco price: includes 2 lenses,  bag and memory!

– Good quality

– ISO goes effectively only to ISO1200 and kit lenses with cam are slow

Best entry-level compact SLR Camera

$700 – $800

Canon EOS 400D or Nikon D40X

– EOS400D ISO perf is slightly better but D40X max ISO is 1 stop higher

– EOS400D kit lens is not great and D40x lens is little bit better

– If you can wait then wait until March/April. Most likely a new EOS450D will be presented

Best 1080p 42” Plasma TV

Panasonic TH-42pz700u

– High rating

– RGB input

– not cheapest model and 1080p resolution will only

be visible at less than 10”

Best 1080p 46” LCD TV

Sony KDL46XBR4

– Quality very close to plasma but double the price…

– Most people will be just fine buying a LCD at half that price. Note Sharp LC-42D64U is one of the few that appears to accept PAL+NTSC composite input

Best Full HD 1080p projector

Sanyo Z2000

– 1920×1080 native resolution, great picture quality, quiet

– little bit deeper in size than previous models

Best Photo printer

Canon Pixma 4500

Note: best entry level photo printer. Better more expensive printers exist (but not a huge difference)
